10 signs it’s time to see a podiatrist!
1. Your feet hurt everyday
Foot pain isn’t normal. Whether it’s your heel, arch, toes, ankle or the ball of your foot, ongoing pain deserves to be investigated. Even mild discomfort can affect the way you walk, which may lead to problems elsewhere such as your knees, hips or back.
2. You have an ingrown nail
An ingrown toenail can quickly become painful, swollen and infected. If you’ve tried home care without success - or the problem keeps coming back - professional treatment can provide lasting relief. In some cases, a minor nail surgery procedure may be the best long-term solution.
3. Your toenails have changed
Thickened, discoloured, crumbly or distorted nails aren’t just a cosmetic concern. They may be caused by a fungal infection, trauma or another underlying condition. An assessment can help identify the cause and guide the most appropriate treatment.
4. You’re struggling with corns and callus
Corns and calluses develop because of pressure or friction, but simply removing them without addressing the cause often means they’ll return. We look at why they’re developing and help reduce the pressure that causes them.
5. You have diabetes
If you have diabetes, looking after your feet is especially important. Changes in sensation or circulation can increase the risk of serious foot complications. Regular foot assessments can help identify problems early and keep your feet healthy.
6. You have a verruca that’s painful or won’t go away
Many verrucas disappear on their own, but some become painful, spread or persist for years. If they’re affecting your walking or daily life, we can discuss the treatment options that may be suitable for you.
7. You notice redness, swelling or signs of infection
Any foot that becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or starts discharging fluid should be assessed promptly. This is particularly important if you have diabetes, poor circulation or a weakened immune system.
8. Your feet are stopping you from doing what you enjoy
Whether it’s walking the dog, gardening, exercising or simply getting around comfortably, foot pain shouldn’t stop you enjoying everyday life. Our aim is to help you move with confidence again.
9. You’re not sure what’s wrong
You don’t need to know exactly what’s causing your symptoms before booking an appointment. That’s what we’re here for. We’ll assess your feet, explain what’s happening and discuss the treatment options available.
10. You have a thick, crumbly or discoloured toenail
Many people assume a thick, yellow or damaged toenail is fungal and spend money on over-the-counter treatments that may not work. Not every abnormal nail is caused by a fungal infection, and even when it is, some infections require a different approach.
A podiatrist can assess your nail, discuss whether fungal testing is appropriate and help you choose the most suitable treatment, so you can avoid wasting time and money on products that aren’t right for your condition.
